Darren Rowse at ProBlogger posted a question to find out how in which languages his audience preferred to blog. People from all over the world responded, some of them use English to reach a wider audience, other are willing to sacrifice the number of readers to certain reasons of their own.
To me, the choice of language was pretty simple.
First, I have a decent command of English, and of course, Russian.
Second, my first blog’s idea was to share the musings on anything that would be on my mind, and monetizing the blog was far-far-away perspective (actually, it was not the perspective at all), so I was only thinking of sharing with as many people as possible, and learning from the feedback.
Thus, you are reading me in Eglish
I am thinking now of starting another blog, which will now concentrate on a specific industry and specific topics. I have already screened the Internet space for similar content, and found out that the niche is vacant, more or less, for the Russian-speaking space, while there some pretty well-done websites in English. The choice of the language came clear to me again: I am ignoring a huge part of the audience to better position within the selected audience and bring more value to the readers. And from there I can start thinking monetization. I hope this works both ways.
