Ray Villafane from the US should be getting rich in one Halloween night: the artist carves amazing sculptures of pumpkins. His hobby had started when he was a school teacher. He made a few pumpkins for students, after which parents started ordering him more complicated face images for their office parties. Now, he charges 2,500 USD per day and travels all around the country all through October.

The concept is made for the historic area in Mexico City where changes to the existing landscape are unacceptable. It preserves the iconic presence of the city square and the existing hierarchy of the buildings that surround it.

As Arch Daily puts it:

The Historic Center of Mexico City is composed of different layers of cities superimposed on top of each other. When the Aztecs first came into the Valley of Mexico they built their pyramids on the lake they found there. When a new and bigger pyramid was conceived and the Aztec Empire grew in size and power, they did not search for a new site, they just built on it and around the existing one. In this manner, the pyramids are composed of different layers of historical periods.

The designers were trying to blend the life down the earth with what is happening on top, thus, massive hole will be covered with a glass floor.

This is only a concept, and probably, will take huge amount of efforts to overcome numerous obstacles, including protests from both the administration and the public: no matter how hidden the final result may be, the process is promising to become a real pain.

I am lost for words here, so I’m going to use the author’s vision to describe it:

My sculpture/performance piece is inspired by Carl Jung’s psychological theory about the shadow. It concerns with the repressed ideas, weakness, and desires of oneself that the conscious mindrefuses to acknowledge.

It represents my ‘shadow’ which involves my hidden desires to be different and become perfect in my own right. We always feel the pressure to be perfect by everything around us such as themedia, social network, advertisement, friends, and family.

I’m sitting here casting my ‘shadow’.

But the installations made by Mike Stilkey might make me reconsider the concepts of Good and Bad.

With a mix of ink, colored pencil, paint and lacquer, Stilkey paints melancholic characters from his fantasies right on the book covers.

And he has spent 34 years to finish it.

The most amazing thing with this sculpture is that it allows you to go on a mini-tour with a ping-pong ball you drop inside the construction. You must see this video below, but if you care for still pictures, they are also available after the jump.
